Many religious leaders portray God as a kind of Santa Claus, doling out extravagant material possessions from his gift bag to everyone on his “Nice” list. A Lexus here, a Macmansion here, an anonymous, 6-figure check here. And by successfully selling this product, they display themselves as proof of its veracity. But does God really reward people with the best this world has to offer? Or have we added yet another layer of gold veneer to the Grand Idol we’ve replaced God with?

“Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved.” We’ve heard this all our lives, and we accept it as truth. But we’re not at all sure what it means to believe. Is it just an admission that Jesus was a real person? That he could perform miracles and come back to life after being killed? That He can somehow get me into heaven? Or does “believing” involve something far more intimate and profound?

All religions seek to reconcile man’s innate lack with an equally innate sense that there exists an Ultimate Reality that can eliminate this lack. Salvation is God’s offer to man, but is the Protestant Christian model the only means to this end?
